As a new addition to Windows 10 we see the Task View and Virtual Desktops feature. Virtual Desktops are not a new idea but this is the first time that we see them natively in Windows without the use of an add on.
What Is Task View
Simply put, Task View is an easy way to see a layout of everything you have open on a desktop as well as to switch between programs or windows with ease.
How do I use it?
Task View can be opened by either clicking the Task View button
in your task bar or by using the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + Tab. Once opened you will see a neat layout of everything you are working on and can easily choose between them.

What is a Virtual Desktop?
A Virtual Desktop is a means of extending your desktop capabilities beyond that of your monitor. You can have unlimited “Virtual Monitors” that you can switch between at your leisure. This feature comes with many benefits, most notably:
- Gives you much more power to group windows and like tasks
- Helps you to quickly locate and switch to the task that you are looking for
How do I use it?
With Task View open, look in the bottom right corner of the screen for a plus sign with the words “New Desktop” under it.

Once you click New Desktop, you will see a blank desktop pop up in the bar along the bottom of the screen. You can open as many new desktops as you want and group your tasks and windows as well as switch between them quickly. Below are a few keyboard shortcuts that can make your virtual desktop experience more user friendly.
- Windows Key + Ctrl + D – Create a new virtual desktop and switch to it.
- Windows Key + Ctrl + F4 – Close the current virtual desktop.
- Windows Key + Ctrl + Left / Right – Switch to the virtual desktop on the left or right.
In conclusion, learning about these two features can make your day to day experience with Windows 10 much smoother and keep you happy and productive.
